With the introduction of macOS Sonoma (14.0), Apple made some changes that may affect the use of certain drivers, including those for smart card readers.
The new driver does not yet work for all card readers, which can cause problems if you want to activate your itsme account with your eID. In that case, you can give your Mac permission to use the old, compatible driver again.
Giving permission for the old driver
- Update your OS through the Mac App Store to macOS 14.1 or higher
- Open the Terminal app on your Mac. You can find this app under Applications > Utilities.
- Copy and paste the following line into the Terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.smartcard useIFDCCID -bool yes - Press Enter. You may be asked to enter the admin password. Enter the password and press Enter.
Note: When entering your password, the cursor will not move. - Restart your computer.
- Open the itsme website on your computer, click on "My Account" > "Activate your itsme" at the top right and follow the steps to activate your account.
